A physician moving across the country has enough to think about. Most arrive to an extended-stay hotel and spend their first months apartment hunting on days off, in one of the harder rental markets in the country.

This is the alternative: a furnished home in the neighborhood they will work in, held by the institution, ready the day they land. Nothing to arrange, no lease signed sight unseen from three states away, no weekends lost to viewings.

Walking distance to almost everything

A physician and their family can establish their own primary care within a short walk, which is one less thing to sort out in a new city. The hospitals and research campuses of South Lake Union are within a 20-minute walk, and I'm glad to give you the exact time from yours. Whole Foods is in the building. So is 1 Hotel Seattle, with the fitness facility. The streets here are tree-lined and quiet for a neighborhood this central.

Sleep first

The curtains make the primary bedroom completely dark, which matters more than anything else on this page to someone who has just come off call. The soaking tub is ready, with a walk-in shower beside it. The thermostat is a smart one, so the unit can be warm before anyone walks through the door.

Then eat

The kitchen is stocked down to the glassware, silverware, and good pots and pans. There is a coffee machine and a drawer of local coffee to start with, cozy towels, and a list of our favorite places to eat nearby, so the first week doesn't have to include research.

Room for family

The second bedroom has a built-in desk and a Murphy bed, so it adapts to whoever needs it: a child's room, a home office, or a place for family to stay. The second full bathroom is beside it. The building also has a guest suite that can be rented when more people come at once.

Why this exists

I'm a physician. I worked locums for 5 years on a housing stipend that bought hotel rooms in cities where I knew no one, and I know what that does to the first months of a job.

This is our first Roadstead property. It's furnished the way I would have wanted it after a long shift, and it's offered to institutions that would rather hand a new hire a home than a hotel key.
